If you have suffered a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy you could have a private pregnancy scan as early as 6 weeks. Most clinics will wait at least 6 weeks to perform a scan as a gestational sac can only be seen from approximately 4 and ½ weeks after you have had your last period. A baby’s heartbeat can usually be detected from 5-6 weeks. Or if you are suffering from bleeding or are worried about anything, we advise you to go for a private pregnancy scan as soon as possible.
Prices for a private pregnancy scan can range from approximately £40 and can go up to £150 depending on where you go.
A private pregnancy scan will not harm your baby, there was a review carried out by the Independent advisory group on radiation and their findings were that they are no evidence that an ultrasound scan increases the risk of mortality to the developing foetus or newborn baby.
On the NHS all pregnant ladies will be offered at least two scans, one at 8-14 weeks and one between 18-21 weeks, some people feel they want more than this so will go for a private pregnancy scan.
If you want to know the gender of your baby, a private pregnancy scan can usually give you a result from about 12-35 weeks, a sonographer will usually be able to tell if you are having a girl or boy at this time. Of course, everybody’s pregnancy is different so it is not always guaranteed. Up until at least the 14th week of pregnancy boys and girls look the same.
